The Short Answer

Sod installation on Martha's Vineyard delivers a mature, weed-free lawn in a single day, which is why it is the preferred choice for new construction, full renovations, and erosion-prone coastal slopes. The result lasts only as long as the preparation beneath it, so Estate Care grades, amends, and tests the soil before a single roll is laid, then manages the critical first three weeks of watering and rooting. Spring and early fall are the ideal install windows on the Island.

Sod or Seed?

When Sod Is the Right Call

Overseeding is the right tool for an existing lawn that needs thickening. But when there is no lawn to save, new construction, a full tear-out, or a bare slope washing toward a pond, sod is faster, cleaner, and far more reliable.

Choose Sod When You Need

An established lawn immediately, for a sale, event, or move-in
Erosion control on a coastal slope or new grade
A weed-free start with no bare-soil germination period
A finished look on a new-construction property
Reliable results where seed would wash out or dry up
Premium sod rolls being laid on prepared soil, Martha's Vineyard

It's all in the base: Sod fails when it's rolled onto poor soil. We grade for drainage, amend sandy or compacted ground, and test fertility first, so the roots knit into living soil, not just sit on top of it.

Done Right From the Ground Up

Our Sod Installation Process

Five stages that turn a roll of grass into a lawn that lasts for decades.

1

Clear & Grade

Remove the old surface and shape the grade for proper drainage away from the home and toward managed runoff.

2

Amend the Soil

Till in compost and amendments matched to your soil test, building a root bed that holds water in sandy ground.

3

Lay the Sod

Premium, locally-sourced sod laid in a tight, staggered seam pattern with clean cuts around beds and hardscape.

4

Roll & Water In

We roll for full soil contact and give the new lawn its deep first watering to begin rooting immediately.

5

Root-In Care

A clear watering schedule and optional follow-up visits through the critical first three weeks of establishment.

Sod Installation FAQs, Martha's Vineyard

With proper watering, sod begins anchoring within 10 to 14 days and is well established in about three weeks. We provide a watering schedule for that critical first stretch, and on the Island's fast-draining sandy soil we often recommend more frequent, lighter watering than mainland guidance suggests.
Spring and early fall are ideal, when temperatures are moderate and rainfall helps establishment. Summer installs are possible but demand diligent watering, and we plan those carefully. We generally avoid laying sod into the dormant cold of late fall and winter.
It depends on the situation. Sod gives an instant, weed-free, erosion-resistant lawn and is ideal for new construction, full renovations, and coastal slopes. Seed works well for thickening an existing lawn but needs a long germination window and is vulnerable to washout. We will recommend whichever fits your property and timeline, and provide a detailed estimate after a site visit.
Full preparation is included and it is the part that determines whether the lawn lasts. We clear, grade for drainage, and amend the soil based on a fertility test before any sod is laid. Sod rolled onto unprepared ground is the most common reason a new lawn fails.
