Rooted in Nature.
Grown on the Vineyard.
Nikola Vasilic was born in 1996 with a deep pull toward the natural world. Growing up, it was never buildings or machinery that captured his attention, it was soil, trees, the way a healthy lawn breathes in the morning, the quiet intelligence of a well-tended garden.
In 2017, at 21 years old, Nikola set foot on Martha's Vineyard for the first time. He still remembers that feeling clearly, the salt air, the ancient stone walls running between meadows, the way the light falls differently here than anywhere else. He wasn't planning to stay. He ended up never leaving.
He found work in landscaping almost immediately, and what started as a job quickly became a calling. The island's ecosystem is unlike anything else in New England - distinct microclimates town by town, soil profiles shaped by glacial history, plants that thrive in salt-spray conditions that would stress the same species a hundred miles away. Nikola threw himself into understanding all of it. He read. He asked questions. He tested things on the properties he cared for and took notes on the results.
That hands-on apprenticeship led him to formal study. He pursued education in organic land care practices through the Northeast Organic Farming Association (NOFA), earning his certification as an Organic Land Care Professional, a credential that reflects a genuine commitment to working with the island's ecology, not against it. No shortcuts, no synthetic shortcuts, no approaches that look good in April and damage the soil by October.
In 2020, Nikola co-founded Estate Care alongside his business partner Milos, channeling everything he'd learned into a company built around a simple idea: Martha's Vineyard properties deserve year-round attention from people who actually understand this land. Today Estate Care serves properties across all six island towns, from seasonal cottages in Oak Bluffs to multi-acre estates in Chilmark.
Nikola writes for the Estate Care blog because he believes an informed property owner is a better partner. When you understand why your lawn behaves the way it does in May, or what's really happening when the soil compacts over a dry summer, you make better decisions - and so does he.
