Growing Anemone on Martha's Vineyard
Anemone, particularly the fall-blooming Anemone x hybrida cultivars and the native Anemone canadensis, are among the most useful and beautiful perennials for extending the floral season in Martha's Vineyard gardens. The Japanese anemones (Anemone x hybrida) excel in the partially shaded, moisture-retentive borders of properties in West Tisbury and Edgartown, producing elegant single or semi-double flowers in white and pink from August through October when the garden palette would otherwise be contracting. The native Canada anemone spreads vigorously in sunny, moist situations and is best suited to naturalizing in the wilder margins of larger island properties.
Japanese anemones can be susceptible to deer browsing. Estate Care professionals manage Japanese anemones carefully, dividing them periodically to prevent them from spreading beyond their intended boundaries while ensuring they remain vigorous enough to sustain their outstanding late-season flowering performance.
