Growing Aruncus on Martha's Vineyard
Aruncus dioicus, the goat's beard, is a magnificent large-scale native perennial that commands attention in the moister, partially shaded garden areas of Martha's Vineyard with its enormous creamy white plumes in June that can reach five or six feet in height, creating a dramatic seasonal presence in the woodland garden borders of larger up-island estates. It thrives in the consistently moist, humus-rich soils found near the island's freshwater ponds and in the sheltered, rain-retaining hollows of properties in West Tisbury and Chilmark. The bold compound foliage remains handsome through summer and into fall, providing season-long architectural structure even after the flowers have faded.
Deer resistance is reliable, supporting its use in open, unfenced garden situations. Estate Care professionals feature goat's beard as a signature plant in large-scale shade garden and woodland edge programs where dramatic seasonal flowering and enduring structural presence are both central to the design vision.
