Growing Campanula on Martha's Vineyard
Campanula, the bellflowers, thrive in the cool coastal microclimate of Martha's Vineyard, performing exceptionally well in lightly shaded borders and partially sheltered garden beds from Oak Bluffs to Vineyard Haven. The genus offers remarkable diversity across species, from the low-growing Campanula carpatica suited to rock garden edges to the tall border species Campanula persicifolia and Campanula lactiflora that deliver vertical white and blue flower spikes in June and July in the mixed perennial borders of island estate properties. Most Campanula species adapt reasonably well to the island's sandy-loam conditions when given consistent early-season irrigation during establishment.
Deer show moderate resistance, though in areas of heavy browsing pressure such as Chilmark and West Tisbury, occasional grazing can be expected. Estate Care professionals deadhead spent blooms consistently to extend the flowering period and cut stems back after the first flush to encourage a second wave of bloom through late summer.
