Growing Dianthus on Martha's Vineyard
Dianthus, the garden pinks, are classic cottage garden perennials that thrive in the well-drained, sandy, neutral-to-alkaline soils of Martha's Vineyard's sunny coastal garden borders, tolerating the island's salt air and wind-swept exposures with notable composure once established. Their compact evergreen mats are persistently ornamental through the island's mild winters, and the clove-scented blooms in late May and June provide a fragrance that is particularly appreciated in the outdoor entertaining spaces and path-edge plantings of properties throughout Edgartown and Vineyard Haven.
Deer resistance is reliable, consistent with the strongly aromatic character of the genus. Estate Care professionals shear dianthus lightly after the primary bloom flush to encourage a modest rebloom in late summer and divide congested mats every two to three years in early spring to prevent the center die-off that develops in older, un-divided plantings.
