Growing Eupatorium on Martha's Vineyard
Eupatorium, now largely reclassified to Eutrochium, encompasses the native Joe Pye weeds and their relatives, which are among the most ecologically valuable and ornamentally substantial native perennials available for Martha's Vineyard's sunny to partly shaded garden borders and naturalistic meadow programs. The tall species, particularly Eutrochium purpureum and Eutrochium maculatum, reach five to seven feet and produce large, dusty-pink flower heads in August and September that are magnets for monarch butterflies during their critical late-summer fueling stop on the island during migration. They thrive in the moist to average, fertile soils of sunny to partly shaded borders on properties throughout the island and tolerate the maritime humidity well.
Deer resistance is reliable. Estate Care professionals incorporate Joe Pye weed into large-scale native border and meadow programs where bold late-summer presence, monarch habitat value, and authentic regional character are all design priorities.
