Growing Gypsophila on Martha's Vineyard
Gypsophila paniculata, baby's breath, thrives in the alkaline, sharply drained, sandy soils that characterize much of Martha's Vineyard's upland terrain, a cultural preference that aligns naturally with the island's coastal growing conditions from Vineyard Haven to Edgartown. The airy, cloud-like mass of white or pale pink flowers in June and July is a classic complement to roses and peonies in traditional perennial borders, and the light, billowing texture it creates is particularly beautiful in the breezy, open-sky coastal garden setting that defines the island's aesthetic.
Deer largely avoid it, and its open habit requires minimal competition management once established in well-drained island soils. Estate Care professionals stake or cage plants before flowering to prevent the sprawl that occurs in richer soils, and cut stems back by half after the primary flush to encourage a secondary bloom contribution in late summer.
