Growing Helenium on Martha's Vineyard
Helenium autumnale, the sneezeweed, is a native perennial of exceptional late-season ornamental value for Martha's Vineyard's sunny border and meadow garden programs, producing masses of daisy-like flowers in warm shades of gold, orange, red, and bicolor from August through October in a display that captures the richness of the island's autumn season at its most spectacular. It thrives in the moist to average soils of sunny perennial borders throughout the island and tolerates the maritime humidity without fungal issues when given adequate spacing and air circulation. The Chelsea chop technique, cutting plants back by one-half in mid-June, is strongly recommended to create compact, self-supporting growth that performs well even in the island's coastal wind conditions.
Deer resistance is reliable. Estate Care professionals incorporate Helenium as a keystone late-season plant in native-focused perennial border programs where fall color, ecological value for native bees, and reliable adaptability to island growing conditions are all equally important.
