Growing Leucanthemum on Martha's Vineyard
Leucanthemum x superbum, the Shasta daisy, is a robust and reliably floriferous perennial ideally suited to the full-sun, well-drained conditions found in the sunny border gardens and meadow-style plantings of Martha's Vineyard properties throughout Edgartown, Oak Bluffs, and Vineyard Haven. Its classic white flowers with bright yellow centers are a staple of mid-summer cutting gardens and complement the island's casual seaside aesthetic naturally. Shasta daisies tolerate the island's sandy soils and coastal winds with good grace, though incorporating organic matter at planting improves their longevity and vigor.
Deer tend to browse them moderately, so siting in more visible and frequently trafficked garden areas near the main residence is advisable on properties with heavy deer pressure. Maintenance involves mid-summer deadheading to prolong bloom and division every two to three years to sustain flowering performance.
