Growing Liriope on Martha's Vineyard
Liriope muscari, the lilyturf, is an exceptionally durable and versatile grass-like perennial ground cover that thrives in the challenging range of conditions encountered across Martha's Vineyard's varied garden environments, from the dry shade beneath mature oaks to the full-sun border edges of coastal Edgartown properties. Its strap-like evergreen foliage, available in green and variegated forms, maintains a tidy appearance through all but the most severe island winters, providing consistent coverage in the shoulder seasons when other perennials have retreated. The purple flower spikes in late summer add a secondary ornamental layer, and the dark berries that follow provide modest wildlife value through winter.
Deer generally avoid it, though occasional light browsing can occur. Estate Care professionals cut Liriope foliage back to the ground in very early spring, before new growth emerges, to remove any winter-damaged tips and present the fresh new season's growth cleanly, maintaining the well-groomed appearance that distinguishes professionally managed island landscape programs.
