Growing Monarda on Martha's Vineyard
Monarda, the bee balms, are native perennials of outstanding ornamental and ecological value for Martha's Vineyard's sunny to partly shaded garden borders, producing vivid red, pink, or lavender flower heads in July and August that are irresistible to ruby-throated hummingbirds during their late-summer foraging on the island. They thrive in the average to moist, well-drained soils of perennial borders throughout the island and tolerate the maritime humidity well, particularly when planted with adequate spacing to promote air circulation and reduce the powdery mildew susceptibility that can affect some cultivars. Mildew-resistant cultivars like 'Jacob Cline' and 'Raspberry Wine' are strongly preferred for island landscapes where summer humidity is a consistent challenge.
Deer resistance is generally reliable. Estate Care professionals divide monarda clumps every two to three years to maintain vigor, and they prioritize mildew-resistant selection in all planting specifications to reduce fungicide applications in professional maintenance programs.
