Growing Nipponanthemum on Martha's Vineyard
Nipponanthemum nipponicum, the Montauk daisy, is a robust coastal perennial uniquely well-adapted to Martha's Vineyard's maritime conditions, producing large white daisy flowers with yellow centers in September and October precisely when the season demands fresh ornamental energy at the landscape's close. Its fleshy, salt-tolerant foliage withstands direct ocean spray and the sustained coastal winds of exposed oceanfront properties in Edgartown, Chappaquiddick, and Gay Head with exceptional durability. It thrives in the lean, well-drained sandy soils of coastal exposures and requires little supplemental fertilization, in fact performing better in leaner soils where excessive nutrients promote lush growth at the expense of flower production.
Deer resistance is reliable. Estate Care professionals cut Montauk daisy back hard to 6 inches in mid-June to ensure compact, well-branched growth that supports the heavy flower load of the autumn display without sprawling or flopping.
