Growing Primula bulleesiana on Martha's Vineyard
Primula bulleesiana and the candelabra primula hybrids are outstanding early-summer perennials for the moist, partially shaded, cool garden settings of Martha's Vineyard, producing tiered whorls of flowers in brilliant shades of orange, yellow, pink, and crimson that create a jewel-like effect in the sheltered, moisture-retentive garden areas of up-island properties from late May through July. They thrive in the consistently moist, humus-rich, slightly acidic soils found beside freshwater ponds and in the rain-retaining garden areas of larger properties in West Tisbury and Chilmark, where the island's maritime air moderates summer temperatures and prevents the heat stress that limits primula performance in continental gardens. Consistent moisture is the single most critical cultural requirement on the island's otherwise lean sandy soils.
Deer largely avoid them. Estate Care professionals incorporate candelabra primulas into signature pond-edge and moist shade garden compositions where early-summer color intensity and a distinctly refined garden character are both client priorities.
