Growing Sanguisorba on Martha's Vineyard
Sanguisorba, the burnets, are elegant and architecturally refined perennials that thrive in the well-drained to moderately moist sunny to partly shaded borders of Martha's Vineyard, producing bottlebrush flower heads in burgundy, white, or pink on tall, wiry stems that sway gracefully in the coastal breezes characteristic of island garden settings. They are exceptionally adaptable to a range of island soil conditions and perform particularly well in the mixed perennial borders of properties in West Tisbury and Edgartown, where their fine, pinnate foliage provides a delicate textural contrast to broader-leaved companions throughout the growing season.
Most Sanguisorba species and cultivars offer reliable deer resistance, an important practical consideration across the island. Maintenance involves cutting plants back to basal foliage in late autumn and dividing established clumps every three to four years to maintain vigor and flowering quality.
