Growing Saponaria on Martha's Vineyard
Saponaria ocymoides, the rock soapwort, is a sprawling, mat-forming perennial that excels in the rock gardens, dry stone walls, and sunny embankments of Martha's Vineyard's coastal properties, producing masses of bright pink flowers in May and June that cascade over stone edges and wall faces with a generosity of bloom that is difficult to match at the same scale and ease of culture. It is perfectly adapted to the island's lean, well-drained, sandy soils and handles salt air and wind exposure with exceptional tolerance, making it one of the few plants that will establish and perform on the most exposed oceanfront terracing and retaining structures.
Deer resistance is reliable. Estate Care professionals specify Saponaria in the most challenging well-drained, sun-baked, wall-top and embankment positions of coastal island properties, shearing plants back by one-third immediately after flowering to promote compact, dense regrowth and prevent the legginess that develops if plants are left uncut through the remainder of the growing season.
