Saxifraga

Saxifraga finds its best expression on Martha's Vineyard in the cool, north-facing rock garden settings and shaded retaining walls of properties in Vineyard Haven and West Tisbury, where temperatures moderate and moisture is more consistent through summer. The low-growing rosettes and delicate spring bloom provide a refined alpine character well-suited to formal stone terracing and naturalistic rock work common in the island's older estate gardens. While not notably salt-tolerant, Saxifraga performs reliably when given shelter from prevailing southwest winds and positioned away from direct coastal exposure.

Deer rarely browse it, supporting its use near unfenced woodland edges. Professional maintenance is light, typically limited to removal of spent flower stalks and careful division every three to four years.
