Growing Scabiosa on Martha's Vineyard
Scabiosa, the pincushion flowers, are graceful, long-blooming perennials that thrive in the well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline, full-sun conditions of Martha's Vineyard's coastal garden borders, producing lavender-blue, white, or pink flowers on wiry, branching stems from June through September in a display that is simultaneously light, airy, and persistently ornamental. They perform particularly well in the sandy, lime-influenced soils near the island's coastal bluffs and stone wall garden features in Edgartown and Vineyard Haven, where sharp drainage suits their Mediterranean cultural preferences. The long-stemmed flowers are excellent for cutting, making Scabiosa a valued addition to cutting garden programs on island properties.
Deer resistance is reliable. Estate Care professionals deadhead Scabiosa diligently through the season to maintain its remarkably long bloom period, divide established plants every two to three years in spring, and use it in the front-to-mid border positions of sunny island gardens where airy, graceful flower form and extended bloom are both required.
