Growing Scutellaria on Martha's Vineyard
Scutellaria incana, the downy skullcap, is an adaptable native perennial that thrives in the partially shaded, well-drained sandy soils widespread across Martha's Vineyard, producing spikes of tubular blue-purple flowers in midsummer that are magnets for native bumblebees and other ground-nesting pollinators active on the island. It performs well in the dry, shaded conditions found beneath the island's native oak canopy, tolerating root competition and summer drought once established in properties across West Tisbury, Edgartown, and Vineyard Haven. Its compact, self-supporting habit requires no staking, and the plant's clean garden behavior makes it suitable for both naturalistic and more formal planting compositions.
Deer resistance is reliable. Estate Care professionals include native skullcap in pollinator-focused garden programs and dry-shade border designs where native species and low-maintenance performance are equally important.
