Growing Smilacina on Martha's Vineyard
False Solomon's Seal is a native woodland perennial perfectly adapted to the shaded, humus-rich soils of Martha's Vineyard's interior forests, performing especially well beneath the old-growth oak canopy of properties in West Tisbury, Chilmark, and Aquinnah. Its creamy white terminal flower clusters in late spring give way to red berries in fall, providing multi-season ornamental interest and wildlife value appreciated in naturalistic island landscapes. The plant is highly tolerant of the island's sandy, acidic soils and once established requires virtually no supplemental irrigation.
Deer tend to avoid it, a notable advantage for woodland plantings in unfenced up-island properties. Estate Care teams frequently include it in native shade garden restoration programs as a low-maintenance, ecologically appropriate choice.
