Growing Trollius on Martha's Vineyard
Trollius, the globeflowers, are elegant cool-season perennials that thrive in the moist, partially shaded conditions found in sheltered island garden settings, producing large, globe-shaped flowers in luminous shades of yellow, gold, and orange in late April and May that provide some of the richest color in the early-season Vineyard garden. They perform best in the consistently moist, humus-rich soils of sheltered borders near the island's freshwater ponds and in the rain-retaining garden areas of up-island properties in West Tisbury and Chilmark, where summer heat is moderated by maritime air and canopy shade. Consistent moisture through the island's dry summer months is critical to their long-term success.
Deer resistance is generally reliable, though not absolute in situations of extreme browsing pressure. Estate Care professionals feature trollius in sophisticated late-spring border compositions near water features and in cool, sheltered garden situations where their jewel-like early flower quality is most effectively displayed.
