Soil Testing & Lawn Fertility
Martha's Vineyard
We don't guess. Every Estate Care program begins with a laboratory soil analysis. Because you can't fix what you haven't measured, and on Martha's Vineyard, your soil tells a very specific story.

Why Island Soil Needs Its Own Strategy
Martha's Vineyard sits on glacial outwash — largely sandy, nutrient-poor soils with a naturally low pH between 5.0 and 5.8. Most grasses require a pH of 6.0 to 7.0 to absorb nutrients efficiently.
This means that even if you're fertilizing regularly, your grass may be starving. Nutrients become chemically unavailable when pH is too low. The solution isn't more fertilizer. It's soil correction.

The Nutrient Lock-Out Problem
When soil pH drops below 5.5, phosphorus becomes chemically bound to soil particles. Your lawn literally cannot access the nutrients you're paying to apply. Annual liming corrects this — and we calculate the exact rate needed per your test results.
What Our Soil Tests Measure
Sent to a certified laboratory, not a DIY kit. Results drive your custom fertility program.
Soil pH
The master variable. Controls nutrient availability for all macro and micronutrients. We target 6.0–6.8 for most grass species.
Organic Matter %
Sandy Island soils typically measure under 2%. We work to raise this gradually through composting and mulching programs.
Phosphorus (P)
Essential for root development. Critical near coastal waters. We apply only what's needed, no excess that could leach.
Potassium (K)
The stress-resistance nutrient. Potassium deficiency leaves lawns vulnerable to drought, disease, and winter injury.
Calcium & Magnesium
Secondary nutrients that also affect soil structure. Lime applications for pH correction simultaneously replenish calcium.
Micronutrients
Iron, manganese, and sulfur deficiencies are common on Vineyard lawns. We identify and address these specifically.
Precision Fertility, Not Just Fertilizer
Generic "four-step programs" apply the same formulas to every lawn. We build a custom nutrient program from your soil test results — applying exactly what your lawn needs, when it needs it.
Organic Nutrient Program
Slow-release organic fertilizers that feed soil microbiology. Safe for children, pets, and waterfront properties. NOFA certified.
Hybrid Nutrition Program
Blend of organic matter and precision synthetic nutrients for clients seeking faster visible results with improved sustainability.
Corrective Lime Program
Calcitic or dolomitic lime applications calculated precisely from your soil test. We use pelletized lime for even distribution.

Stop Fertilizing Blindly.
A soil test costs less than one extra fertilizer application. It tells you exactly what your lawn needs — and what you're wasting money on.
