Growing Anemonella on Martha's Vineyard
Anemonella thalictroides, the rue anemone, is a delicate spring ephemeral native to the eastern woodlands that finds a fitting home in the shaded, humus-rich garden soils of Martha's Vineyard's interior properties, producing small white or pale pink flowers on hair-fine stems in April and May above fine-textured glaucous foliage. It thrives in the dappled shade of oak woodland settings in West Tisbury and Chilmark, where the acidic, sandy soils and light canopy conditions closely approximate its native habitat. As with other spring ephemerals, the foliage retreats entirely by midsummer, requiring companion plantings to provide seamless coverage through the remainder of the season.
Deer largely ignore it. Estate Care professionals include it in botanically sophisticated native shade garden compositions where spring ephemeral character and ecological authenticity are central to the planting design.
