Growing Hemerocallis on Martha's Vineyard
Hemerocallis, the daylilies, are among the most versatile, forgiving, and broadly adapted perennials in the Martha's Vineyard landscape palette, tolerating the island's sandy soils, salt-influenced air, summer drought, and partial shade with a composure that makes them practically indispensable in the professional island landscape program. Established daylily plantings are found throughout the island from the open coastal terrain of Edgartown and Katama to the sheltered gardens of West Tisbury, performing reliably year after year with minimal intervention in a range of exposure and soil conditions.
Deer do browse daylilies with some frequency on the island, so placement in visible, trafficked garden areas or within protected enclosures is advisable on properties with documented high deer activity. Estate Care professionals divide overgrown clumps every three to four years in early spring or late summer to restore flowering vigor and foliage quality, and cut foliage to the ground in late autumn to promote clean, healthy emergence in the following spring.
