Growing Amsonia on Martha's Vineyard
Amsonia tabernaemontana, the bluestar, is a native perennial of exceptional all-season quality for Martha's Vineyard gardens, producing steel-blue star-shaped flowers in May and following up with fine-textured willow-like foliage that turns brilliant golden-yellow in October, providing some of the best native autumn color available in the island's sunny perennial border. It thrives in the full-sun to partial-shade, well-drained sandy soils widespread across the Vineyard and is notably tolerant of the dry summer periods and coastal wind exposure that characterize island growing conditions. Deer resistance is strong due to the plant's milky sap, which is consistent across the genus.
The naturally rounded, self-supporting mounded form requires minimal staking or structural support even in exposed island garden settings. Estate Care professionals rely on bluestar as a four-season anchor plant in sophisticated perennial programs where spring bloom, summer structure, and autumn color are all valued.
