Growing Gillenia on Martha's Vineyard
Gillenia trifoliata, the bowman's root or Indian physic, is a refined and underused native perennial of great garden merit for Martha's Vineyard's partial-shade garden borders, producing delicate star-shaped white flowers on airy, branching stems in June that are followed by attractive reddish seed calyces that persist well into autumn. It thrives in the well-drained, humus-rich, moderately moist soils of partially shaded borders in West Tisbury and Edgartown, and is notably adaptable to a range of soil conditions including the island's characteristic sandy substrate. The attractive three-part foliage develops warm orange and red autumn color, extending the plant's ornamental contribution well beyond its June flowering season.
Deer resistance is reliable. Estate Care professionals value Gillenia as an elegant, native-origin choice in sophisticated part-shade border programs where refined botanical character, multi-season interest, and low-maintenance self-reliance are all design priorities.
