Growing Iris on Martha's Vineyard
Iris encompasses a remarkably diverse genus with varieties suited to nearly every garden condition Martha's Vineyard presents, from the bearded iris cultivars that excel in the hot, well-drained, full-sun borders of coastal Edgartown properties to the Siberian iris that thrives in the moist, partially shaded conditions near the island's freshwater ponds. Bearded irises are particularly well-suited to the island's sandy, alkaline-tending soils and handle coastal wind exposure with good composure once rhizomes are firmly established. Siberian irises deliver exceptional performance in the moister, slightly acidic soils of up-island borders in West Tisbury and Chilmark, producing elegant flowers in blue, purple, and white with minimal maintenance.
Deer resistance is strong across most iris species due to the acrid compounds in their rhizomes. Estate Care professionals maintain iris plantings with regular division every three to four years and disciplined deadleafing to sustain the clean, well-groomed appearance expected in professional landscape programs.
